I’m a complete beginner, where do I start?
At the beginning! All our courses start with the beginner in mind. As you progress you develop the skills needed to undertake each project, constantly challenging to provide a stimulating learning environment.
Which is the best course for me?
You may want to learn upholstery just for the satisfaction of completing a one off project, maybe a tired old chair which needs some love and attention so it can be given pride of place. Or you might be looking for a new creative outlet and practical skill, a hobby which you can use to improve your home (beware it’s addictive and friends and family come out of the woodwork with more projects). You might want to retrain to work in a different way or start your own business. We have upholstery courses to suit all requirements. Please don’t hesitate to give us a call to discuss your goals and how we can help you achieve them. We can also tailor courses to meet individual requirements.
I have been on an upholstery course before but I want to learn more. Is this possible?
Absolutely, these course are all about learning new things, as far as possible we will take into account any previous experience to ensure that things are not repeated. (The AMUSF courses follow a set curriculum.)
How do I know what project to bring?
In the course description are examples of the projects for each course, if you are unsure give us call or send through an image of your chair to info@oxfordschoolofupholstery.com
How strong do you have to be?
Learning to upholster is a creative and physical activity, there is always somebody available to help you lift and move your furniture.
Do I need my own tools?
The workshop is fully equipped with all the upholstery tools you will need, however students who undertake longer courses tend to collect, buy and cherish their own. We can help advise and source the best quality upholstery tools available.
How many students on the Upholstery Classes?
The one week classes are limited to 7 students, this allows for one to one teaching and individual support. We have a dedicated tutor whose level of expertise and upholstery know how has been gathered over years of working with furniture and who will guide you, individually through the techniques you need to learn, supporting you in your practice as you go along. You’ll also receive top tips from our pattern cutter and sewer extraordinaire who gives additional support to the class, teaching sewing skills, and how to template and cut fabric for your projects. As the classes are run alongside the Upholstery and Soft Furnishing Workshop there is always plenty to see and our upholstery team are happy to explain what they are doing, giving a real insight into the day to day life of the professional upholsterer.
If my circumstances change is it possible to reschedule or cancel a booking?
Our aim is to help you to achieve your goals as the courses progress, we also understand that sometimes life throws up obstacles. We will do all we can to accommodate any unforeseen changes.
Please see the Terms and Conditions for more detail.
Does the cost of the course include materials?
Materials are charged separately as they vary from project to project. Students will be given a materials sheet to list items used. The cost of materials is charged at the end of each week depending on what has been used.
Can I buy fabrics through you?
You certainly can, we have accounts with all the major fabric houses and offer students a 10% discount off the Retail Price, remember to order fabric at the beginning of the week so it arrives in time for fitting the top cover. One of the team will be happy to help you choose the perfect fabric for your project. We also have some ends of rolls and off-cuts for smaller projects.
